You may have noticed, I’m getting hitched this summer! So in an effort to keep my sanity in tact as I simultaneously work two practically full-time jobs (5th grade plus farm school), tend my urban farm and plan and craft a wedding, I decided to plan my entire farm schoolhouse schedule for the summer. It’s going to be lighter than usual, but relevant, practical, and fun as usual. I hope you’ll join me in a class this summer and will spread the word about these awesome upcoming garden learning opportunities! Catch ’em while you can!
- May 24th: Cocktail Gardening Class at Windmill Gardens
Cocktail gardening is all the rage right now- and for good reason! There is nothing more satisfying than sipping on a cool and delicious, homegrown beverage on a hot day. From your own sodas to drinks of the ‘happy hour’ variety, we’ll cover all the basics. Topics include growing aromatic herbs like lemon verbena and basil; tips and recipes for making nonalcoholic beverages like shrubs (old fashioned drinking vinegar) and simple syrups for homemade soda; and the basic ratios professionals use to create restaurant-quality cocktails with your own homegrown herbs and fruits.
- May 31st: Space Saver Gardening (AKA Square Foot Gardening and Plant Family 101)
This class will give you the tools you need to grow the largest yield of food you can in a small space! In addition to learning about the square foot gardening method, I’ll help you build your understanding of the major plant families so you know what plants grow well together and how to best care for them organically! You’ll leave this class armed with strategies for making the most of your yard!
- A Super Special Friday Night Class – June 6th: Beverage Gardening Cocktail Party!
You are cordially invited to a beverage gardening cocktail party! Spend this special Friday evening in the urban farm schoolhouse sipping on tasty botanical beverages*, noshing on appetizers and learning how to make your own homegrown beverages! Topics will include growing aromatic herbs like lemon verbena, basil and lemon balm; tips and recipes for making non-alcoholic beverages like shrubs (old fashion drinking vinegar) and simple syrups for homemade soda; and the basic ratios professionals use to create restaurant-quality cocktails with your own homegrown herbs and fruits. *We’ll discuss recipes and tips for crafting cocktails, but at this event, only non-alcoholic beverages will be sampled.
- June 14th and 21st: Mosaic Flower Stone Workshop
This is a two-part class. In part one, you will work on creating your own flower stone design on a stone that you will take home at the end of the workshop. In part two, you will grout your flower stone so that it’s ready to beautify your garden!
I’ve organized the class around a few important categories: Tools for temperature and moisture; Plant supports and trellises; and Organic pest prevention and fertilizer! You will understand and learn about what different edible plants need to thrive, what garden structures and tools can help those vegetables grow, why the tools are effective, and how they work so you use them more purposefully in the garden.
